Updated: 5 days ago

Do you love your cat and want to immortalize their beauty and charm in photos? Do you want to know how a professional pet photographer can help you achieve that goal? If so, you’re in the right place.

Hi, I’m Jennifer, the owner and photographer of Paws & Tails Pet Photography. I specialize in creating stunning and personalized portraits of cats and their owners. As a former cat mom myself, I know how much your feline friend means to you, and how much you want to capture their unique personality in photos.

In this blog post, I’m going to share with you some of the secrets and techniques I use to create amazing cat photos that reflect the authentic essence of your cat. Whether you want to book a session with me, or just learn some tips and tricks to improve your own cat photography skills, you’ll find this post helpful and informative.

How I Get to Know Your Cat’s Personality

The first step to creating a great cat photo is to understand your cat’s personality. Is your cat a playful adventurer or a sophisticated lounge enthusiast? Is your cat shy or outgoing, curious or cautious, calm or energetic?

To answer these questions, I use a combination of methods:

  • I ask you, the owner, to fill out a questionnaire before the session, where you can tell me more about your cat’s likes, dislikes, habits, and quirks.

  • I meet you and your cat in person for a meet and greet, where I can observe and interact with your cat, and see how they react to different situations and stimuli.

  • I use a variety of tools, treats, and toys during the session, to elicit different responses and expressions from your cat, and to make them feel comfortable and relaxed.

By doing these things, I can get a better sense of your cat’s personality, and tailor the session accordingly. This way, I can capture the true spirit of your cat, and create photos that you’ll love and cherish.

How I Choose the Best Location for Your Cat Photo Session

The next step to creating a great cat photo is to choose the best location for the session. The location plays a big role in setting the mood and tone of the photo and also affects how your cat behaves and feels.

I always recommend choosing a location where your cat feels safest and most comfortable, whether at home or in a familiar outdoor setting. This way, your cat will be more relaxed and cooperative, and less stressed and scared.

Some of the benefits of choosing a home or outdoor location are:

  • You don’t have to worry about transporting your cat to a studio, which can be stressful and risky for both of you.

  • You can use your cat’s favourite spots, toys, and accessories as props and backgrounds, which can add more personality and meaning to the photo.

  • You can capture your cat in their natural environment, where they can show their true colours and expressions.

Of course, choosing a home or outdoor location also comes with some challenges, such as lighting, weather, and distractions. But don’t worry, I have the experience and equipment to handle any situation, and to create the best possible photos for you and your cat.

How I Capture Candid and Enchanting Moments of Your Cat

The final step to creating a great cat photo is to capture candid and enchanting moments of your cat. These are the moments when your cat shows their unique quirks and expressions, and when you can see their soul and personality shine through.

To capture these moments, I use a few techniques:

  • I engage in playful interactions with your cat, using toys, treats, and sounds to get their attention and interest. I also let your cat initiate and lead the play, so they can feel more confident and comfortable.

  • I use a fast shutter speed and a continuous shooting mode, to capture every movement and gesture of your cat, and to not miss any opportunity for a great shot.

  • I use a low angle and a close-up perspective, to get on your cat’s eye level and to create a more intimate and personal connection with your cat.

By using these techniques, I can capture the unscripted and spontaneous moments that often result in the most captivating and memorable photos.

Let’s celebrate the month dedicated to the true royalty of our hearts—our fabulous feline companions.
